STEPS TO BECOME A FIREFIGHTER IN FLORIDA

Step 1: Fulfill The Minimum Eligibility Criteria

To be a firefighter in Florida, you have to fulfill the Minimum Eligibility Criteria, which includes, Minimum age of 18, a high-school diploma or GED certificate, Florida’s valid driving license and no criminal record.

Step 2: Pass The Written Examination

This written exam that an applicant must take in Florida, is to evaluate the personality, communication skills, mathematical reasoning, mechanical reasoning and situational analysis.

Step 3: Qualify The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)

This exam comprises of 8 minor tasks where each one is based on time limit of 10 minutes and 20 seconds. Each task is to test whether the physical ability of the applicant meets the demand of what entails to be a firefighter in Florida or not.

Step 4: Enroll For Firefighting Training

Once the applicant clear both physical and written examination, the applicant must enroll in a Firefighting training academy. Citrus County Fire Training, Fire Academy Of The South, Coral Springs Regional Institute of Public Safety and Florida State Fire College are a few academies of that run fire training programs.

Step 5: Obtain Formal Education

It is not compulsory to obtain formal education in Florida, but if you’re interested or want to then you can get a short-term diploma of 3-6 months, A 2-Year Associate degree or A 4-Year Bachelor’s degree of fire science.

Step 6: Obtain A Medical Certificate

The state of Florida requires the firefighters to hold at least a basic First-Aid, CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), ECC (Emergency Cardiovascular Care) and EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) Certificate.
